Presidency of the Republic
In the Portuguese constitutional system, the President of the Republic is the Head of State. He or she represents the Portuguese Republic, ensures national independence, the unity of the State and the regular functioning of the democratic institutions. He or she is the automatic Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The President of the Republic is elected by universal suffrage in a direct and secret ballot of Portuguese citizens who are 18 years old and over. His or her mandate is for 5 years, and it is not possible for him or her to be elected to a third consecutive term of office.
His or her competences include the establishing of dates for the different electoral acts, the dissolution of the Portuguese Parliament, the nomination of the Prime-Minister and the other members of the Government, the dismissal of the Government, the dissolution of the organs of government of the autonomous regions, the promulgation of Laws and Decree-Laws, a formal request to the Constitutional Court for the declaration of the unconstitutionality of Laws, Decree-Laws and international conventions, nominations of ambassadors, following the Government's proposal to the effect, or the ratification of international treaties.
He or she presides over the Council of State, the consultative political body of the President of the Republic.

The Portuguese Parliament  Sovereign body and parliament representing all Portuguese citizens, the Portuguese Parliament (Assembleia da Republic - AR) is made up of 230 MPs, directly elected by citizens for a four-year term of office. The AR is the principal legislative organ, with the competency to legislate in all matters. Its legislative competency includes reserved competency - for matters which can only be legislated by the AR - and shared competency - for matters where legislation can be issued by the AR and by the Government. The MPs of the AR are the holders of a status which endows them with special rights and duties; they can, for example, present papers for constitutional revision as well as government bills, and ask questions to the Government on any of its acts or that of its administration. The AR can be dissolved by the President of the Republic, after having had hearings with the parties represented in the AR and also the Council of State. Government The Government is the organ which manages the general policy of the Country and is the highest organ within the Public Administration. It is made up of the Prime Minister, Ministers, Secretaries and Under Secretaries of State. The Prime Minister and the Ministers make up the Council of Ministers, the cabinet body with legislative competency. It is responsible to the President of the Republic and the Parliament of the Republic (Assembleia da República). The Government's main essential task is to ensure the functioning of the public administration, fulfil collective needs and ensure that legislation is correctly applied. The Government also has a legislative competency which, in some cases, is a competency of its own, and in other cases is a shared competency along with the competency of the Portuguese Parliament (relative competency) and, in a further case, depends on the previous authorisation of the Portuguese Parliament. The Prime Minister is nominated by the President of the Republic, after having had hearings with the parties represented in the Portuguese Parliament and taking into consideration the electoral results. The Government is also the organ which manages the general policy of the Country and is the highest organ within the Public Administration.

Courts
The Courts are the organs of sovereignty with the competency to administer justice in the name of the people. In carrying out justice it is incumbent on the Courts to ensure the defence of the rights and interests of the citizens that are legally protected, punish any violation of democratic legality and determine public and private conflicts of interests. The Courts are independent and only subject to the Law.
Constitutional Court
The Constitutional Court is the Court with the specific competency to administer justice in matters of a legal and constitutional nature. It has to judge on unconstitutionality and illegality.
It is made up of 13 judges, with 10 appointed by the Portuguese Parliament and 3 co-opted by these. They have a 9-year non-renewable term of office.
The Head of the Constitutional Court is elected by the respective judges.

Supreme Court of Justice
This is the highest judicial court in Portugal and is thus the court of final instance. The judges of the Supreme Court of Justice are nominated by the Higher Magistrate Council, and are known as «the Bench» or literally «Advisory Judges» (Juízes Conselheiros) and elect their respective Head from amongst themselves.
