Portugal will celebrate the enlargement of the Schengen Area to the new nine Member States of the European Union with a Popular Festivity that will take place at Praça do Comércio next Sunday, 23 December, between 15h00 and 18h00.
The abolition of border controls in the new nine Member States of the European Union (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta and Poland) was approved at the JHA (Justice and Home Affairs) Council meeting, which was held in Brussels on December 6th, and it will be celebrated with ceremonies at several border points, on 21 and 22 December.
